Bridgewater State University has unveiled an innovative cybersecurity training initiative aimed at bridging the gap between academic learning and real-world application. This new approach is designed to address the growing demand for skilled cyber professionals and tackle a common shortfall in hands-on training among cybersecurity graduates.
In response to feedback from industry employers about the lack of practical experience among new graduates, Steve Zuromski, CIO at Bridgewater State University, spearheaded the development of a cutting-edge cybersecurity program. “We recognize the urgent need for a more applied approach to cyber training,” Zuromski explained. “Our goal is to build and diversify the talent pipeline in Massachusetts and beyond.”
The program, named CASE (Center for the Advancement of STEM Education), includes a state-of-the-art Cyber Range and a Security Operations Center (SOC). The Cyber Range, a virtual facility, allows students and external participants to engage in simulated cyberattack scenarios in a secure environment. This facility is designed to provide realistic crisis simulations, enhancing participants’ skills in a controlled setting. “The Cyber Range offers a unique, immersive experience where participants handle simulated attacks and devise strategies to mitigate threats,” Zuromski noted.
Complementing the Cyber Range, the SOC, developed in collaboration with CyberTrust Massachusetts, provides real-time monitoring and response to live events from local municipalities and non-profits. This dual-faceted approach ensures that students gain both theoretical knowledge and practical experience. “Our SOC not only supports local organizations but also offers students invaluable hands-on experience in a live setting,” Zuromski added.
The program extends its reach beyond university students. Michelle Stanfield, director of Bridgewater’s Cyber Range, highlighted that the initiative also includes certification programs for career changers and upskilling opportunities for professionals. Additionally, the Cyber Range engages K-12 students, introducing them to cybersecurity concepts early in their education.
The Cyber Range spans 1,200 square feet and features advanced facilities, including 24 workstations, an 18-foot video wall, and a control room equipped with theatrical lighting to enhance the immersive experience. Funded through federal, state, and local grants, the facility represents a significant investment in cybersecurity education.
Bridgewater State University’s new program aims to not only fill a critical gap in cybersecurity training but also to contribute to the broader field of cyber defense by developing a skilled and knowledgeable workforce. The university has already seen strong interest, with over 200 applications for its new bachelor’s degree program in cybersecurity, set to launch this fall.
